WWF Smackdown report
Smackdown tonight was a great show, with all of the segments building to the PPV. It featured a huge flop and the return of Steve Austin to a WWF ring. Here's the results:
Jakked matches
( 1) D-Lo Brown beat Al Snow by DQ. Very solid match with great heat and some nice spots. Snow missed a moonsault off the guardrail to the floor. Brown won by DQ when he went for a powerbomb, and snow hit him with an object.
(2) Rikishi beat Viscera. Before the match, Vis said he used to be a great dancer, talking about the MOM days. Ah, memories. Short match won with a savate kick.
(3) Steve Blackman beat Val Venis. I guess Blackman was still mad about Venis stealing his weapons. Decent enough match. Venis had the match won the the fisherman suplex, but Snow ran in and interfered, giving Blackman the victory.
(4) Godfather & Taka Michinoku & Sho Funaki beat The Headbangers & Stevie Richards. Well, it was something fresh. Action wasn't too great. Godfather won with the pimp drop.
Smackdown matches
(1) Essa & Val Venis beat Eddie Guerrero & Chyna. Great action, since Eddie was in most of the way. Eddie-Eddie will be great if this match was any indication. Essa's team won when Essa hit the moonsault on Eddie.
Next was our weekly interview segment, except this one was a big one. Rock did his usual rambling interview until the McMahons and DX came out. Vince said Shane would ref the main event at Backlash. Rock then guaranteed Austin would appear on SD tonight to a huge pop.
The McMahons found Austin's foam finger attached to their bus.
(2) Dean Malenko beat Scotty Too Hotty to regain his lightweight championship. Good match, but how many times have we seen it? Scotty went for a sunset flip, but Malenko sat on him and grabbed the ropes for the win. Malenko matches always have finishes that come out of nowhere.
(3) Test & Prince Albert beat The Hollys. Not too good. Dudleys were shown watching backstage. Test hit an elbow drop for the win. Dudleys then ran in and layed Test and Albert out. They got a table in position and Buh Buh hoisted Trish to the top for a powerbomb. She made out with him and escaped, however. Crowd did not like that.
(4) Chris Jericho & Tazz beat Saturn & Chris Benoit. Great, great match. Lots of highspots and teased finishes. Tazz and Benoit exchanged some great suplexes. Y2J's team won when he hit the Lionsault.
(5) Christian beat Road Dogg. Another good match, lots of nice innovative spots. Christian missed a dropkick from the top. He did hit a spinning reverse DDT. Road Dogg won with his finisher. Afterwards, though, he continued to attack Christian and had the decision reversed.
Triple H got 3:16 on his beeper. Shane attacked an Austin stand-up.
(6) Big Show & Rikishi defeated Kurt Angle & Bull Buchannan & Big Bossman. Bad match. Show hit a chokeslam for the win. Afterwards, Show and Rikishi danced together to a huge pop. Angle tried to attack them, but was run off by the APA.
Shane, Triple H, and Vince broke into a room that had a speaker playing Steve Austin's voice.
(7) Jeff Hardy fought Matt hardy to a no decision for the Hardcore Title. Really fun match. Jeff brought out a ladder, and did the leg drop spot from No Mercy. What a site. In the middle of the match, all of the hardcore wrestlers for Backlash ran in and fought. Somehow, Crash ended up as Hardcore Champion again. That's right, it ain't over yet.
A delivery guy showed up with a cement truck, and said it was supposed to be poured into a Corvette. Vince fired him.
Shane and Triple H beat up a guy that looked like Austin in the bathroom.
(8) Godfather beat Steve Blackman by DQ. Double duty from these two? Match ended when Snow attacked GF from behind after the match.
Rock was shown arriving.
At this point, the crowd became pre-occupied with some flashers. Things got so out of control, Lawler had to get in the ring and do some mic-work to calm everyone down. He's such a master of crowd manipulation. He told the crowd he didn't believe Austin would be here tonight, and if he was, Triple H would kill him.
And then, the big angle. The McMahons and DX came out and called out Austin. He didn't come out. They did more mic work. The Rock then arrived and said he made a promise and would keep it. He then introduced Austin on the OvalTron. After talking a bit, Austin got in a crane and attempted to destroy the DX Express with a cinder block. One problem. Nothing happened! They accidentally showed some guy getting in the crane and helping Austin. Still, nothing happened! We then just got a wide shot of the crane for five minutes. Vince did some ad-libbing. Finally, we went back to the crane shot. A couple more shots to the bus where nothing happened. Finally, the bus exploded. Just terrible. This is where Smackdown should go off the air, with a little editing.
Then, after the cameras stopped rolling, Austin then came to the ring and drank about 96 beers to a humongous pop. He was visibly ticked off, though.
