Report of last night's Wrestletalk America program with Vince Russo and Trish Stratus
Last night on Wrestletalk America with the Devious Doc, The Devious Doc delivered a beauty and a brain to his listeners. In the first hour, WTA was joined by the newest Diva in the WWF, and manager of T&A, Trish Stratus. Trish called in from backstage of the WWF house show in Columbia, South Carolina. Trish talked about how she was thrown in front of the camera without any training. She said she went to a wrestling school by her own choice. She is a former radio wrestling show host from Toronto. She says she still marks out - even backstage - but is becoming more comfortable with it. She also talked about her tag team's upcoming match with those Damn Dudleys and her recent kiss with Buh Buh Ray. She anticipates a very tough and exciting match at Backlash between these two teams. Then things really started to heat up. In the second and third hours, The Devious Doc welcomed the new "bat" man of WCW, the man who is now teamed with Eric Bischoff to bring WCW back from the grave, Vince Russo. Vince started off by stating that a lot has happened with WCW the last two weeks and will continue to happen in the coming weeks. He stated that something or somebody needed to light a fire underneath WCW, and between Eric and himself, they have. Russo also stated that all the workers know they must give 100% to the show and the fans, or they are out of there. Russo then started to talk about the past few months in WCW. He stated that WCW knew who they were hiring and his style of writing. Russo brought up the fact the show before he took control did a 2.6 in the ratings. By the time everything went down and he was removed, his last show did a 3.1. He felt WCW was well on its way to getting back into the fight against Vince McMahon when the good ol' boys started playing politics and got in Bill Busch's ear. When he was released, Russo said he knew it was a matter of time before he would be back. He said he never watched anything with WCW after his first stint because the product was awful. He knew the question was how long would they let it go on. Russo said WCW tried to bring him back several times under the same circumstances, but he refused. When Brad Siegel became involved and got rid of people, Brad got Eric Bischoff and himself together. On when Bischoff and himself first met, Russo said they hit it off. When he looked in Eric's eyes, he saw something that he had never seen in anyone else's eyes in WCW. When he saw the fire in Eric's eyes, he knew there was no doubt that there would be no politics - just two guys wanting to win. Russo explained to listeners who called in that all he and Eric can do is put on the best show possible. Some mistakes will happen. Everyone in the locker room is excited and not worried about the ratings. Russo also said that he felt as a "wrestling fan" and not "anti-WWF" that Vince McMahon threw it into cruise control while WCW was so bad. He didn't need to do anything creative because there was no competition. Russo promised that between himself and Eric Bischoff combined, they will blow Vince McMahon out of the water, not as a shot at Vince, but creatively what Eric & Russo can do will bring them to new heights. When asked about how the changes were being handled in the locker room, especially with the likes of Hulk Hogan, Russo stated it is completely bulls--t about what people were saying about Hogan. He said Hogan was getting so much heat about television. No one was working with him; he was doing what he knows to do best. He said Hogan is a creative guy and knew there needed to be a change, but unfortunately, the guys leading him didn't have a clue on how to do that. When talking about the rest of the locker room, Russo admitted that the first time he ever walked into the locker room it was unorganized and not very happy. He told Bill Busch that before you fix television, you have to fix the locker room. Nurse Feelbetter brought up a subject that made Russo laugh when questioned about it - it was Standards and Practices. He said during his first stint, S&P basically ran the show. Most of their decisions were ridiculous. One story he had was that they would not allow "Rowdy" Roddy Piper offend a fat woman in the audience because they thought it would offend fat women all over the world. Now that he is working with Bischoff, S&P hides in a room and never poke their head out. He said it is quite a difference working with Bill Busch and Eric Bischoff. Nurse Asset asked about one of her former favorites, the Ultimate Warrior. Russo had stated in the past that there was room for the Warrior in WCW, and did that hold true now? Russo said he had talked to the Warrior right before he was removed from booking and was very close to bringing him in. He said thank God they didn't because he would have been killed by everyone. He still feels there is a place for him and may talk to him in the future. Russo talked about the status of Goldberg, stating that his first match will probably be the PPV in June (Great American Bash), but you may see him show up on TV in late May. He said it was Goldberg's choice to use his hand in punching out the window. Russo stated he wanted him to use a bat. Goldberg had a gimmick in his hand, but it slipped back into his hand when he hit the window. This brought up a point that Russo was adamant about. He says he reads the Internet, and a lot of people say that Eric and himself are pushing the envelope. He said that is so untrue - it's the wrestlers pushing the envelope. They have to protect the wrestlers from themselves. When it comes to booking matches, Eric and himself let them know how the finish is to be to fit the storyline. The wrestlers lay out the match, with them not knowing what they are doing until they do it. He is the first one to meet them behind the curtain to yell at them if they did something he didn't like. Russo then gave an update on Rey Mysterio, Jr. and Konnan. He say Rey is still 6 to 8 weeks away, and K-Dog is ready, and they are just waiting for the right time. When asked about talent that had left (Benoit, Malenko, etc.), he said he hopes that one day they find their way back to WCW. A few callers gave Vince Russo a hard time about copying the WWF. Russo said that the Nitro set doesn't look like the Raw set. The big screen television plays an important part of every broadcast. As far as copying other things, Russo stated that everything you see on WWF today came from him. His ideas, his storylines, etc. As a matter of fact, Russo stated that if you ever talk to The Rock, The Rock would tell you that Vince Russo gave him the idea of going out and referring to himself in the third person manner that he does now. He remembers that conversation to this day. He also said The Rock is one of the nicest guys and loves him to death. He said 90% of what you see in the WWF now came from Vince Russo. It was Vince Russo that brought the brand of style to television. When Vince McMahon called him, the ratings were at a 1.9. He brought Vince McMahon into the year 2000. Russo does not take all the credit, realizing that the performers still had to do their job, and they did it well. No one could do what Austin does, or Mick does, or the Rock does. But as far as feel, attitude and content, it came from Vince Russo. So for anyone saying he is copying WWF, Russo says it's hard to copy yourself. He says he loves Vince McMahon and his family, and always will, because they gave him a break, and he owes them a lot. But, he is competitive and it's competition right now, not personal, and he is the enemy. One caller stated that even with the changes, it was still the same old WCW. Russo disagreed and brought up the point that he thought the WWF had much more gaping holes in their storylines. For instance, not to knock the WWF, why did the Rock accept Austin in his corner? Why did The Rock trust Vince McMahon? Russo feels they have done things in the last month to make Rock look like an idiot. Vince said not everything is going to work for WCW, but when Nitro or Thunder is over, if he can look Eric in the eyes and know that they put the best show out there and everyone gave 150% - not just us, but the boys in the back and the talent - that's all you can do. There will be mistakes and things that can be dissected or pulled apart. But at the end of the night, it comes down to one question: were you or weren't you entertained? Russo was asked about gearing the show to Internet savvy viewers. Russo said they weren't doing that, but he hates it when you insult the intelligence of fans. That drives him crazy more than anything else. He wants to give credit to the fans realizing they know and understand the business. That brought up Tony Schiavone and the way he acts like a person never existed before until they are in WCW. Russo said that Schiavone has been doing that for so long, he needs to be sat down and educated that the fans are a lot smarter and the business has changed. He feels with time, Schiavone will adapt to the system. But insulting the fans is Russo's biggest pet peeve. He knows it's not going to be an overnight process. The three months he was gone, they tried to go back to traditional wrestling. A lot of that was insulting to the fans. When asked about Bret Hart, Russo said that Bret wants to come back and thinks he will return in July. Russo stated that when he first came to WCW, he sat down and talked with Bret and admits that Bret and himself don't see eye to eye on everything. Russo said to this day that he would defend what Vince McMahon did in the past. But now, they are on the same team and the relationship is fine. When asked about the rumor of backstage feuding between Ferrara and himself, he said there was no heat and it was more of a disappointment. He spoke to Ed about it and got everything he had off his chest, but he was disappointed for the position he took when he left. Russo was also asked about the report that he received a call from Jim Ross Tuesday following Nitro. Russo said J.R. would not dare call him, and if he did, he would eat him for lunch. Hell no, J.R. did not call him. Russo said J.R. took every opportunity to bury him because J.R. couldn't stand the fact that Vince Russo was the right hand man to Vince McMahon and not J.R. Russo said he would sooner drop dead than apologize to J.R. When asked about the Saturday night programming, he said it was made a recap show because the program was so bad that if he were a new wrestling fan, he would never watch Nitro or Thunder after watching that. So it needed a quick fix and was made a recap show. Russo talked about making sure that Sting will never drop from the ceiling at the Kemper Arena. He gets sick to his stomach every time he goes into that building. He said Scott Hall will not be back for at least 6 to 8 weeks, and thinks Kronic will do very well in WCW. He finished by saying that WCW is cutting back on house shows to refine their product.
