Heat matches

(1) The Hardy Boys pinned Head Cheese after a Swanton Bomb from Jeff onto Steve Blackman. The Hardys got the first big pop of the night. Several sections of the crowd tried to start up a "Head Cheese" chant in the same town were it was originated, but it didn't catch on. The crowd popped for every Hardys spot. During the match, Head Cheese did the cliched "I hold this guy while you hit him and if he ducks we can argue and break up" tag team maneuver. This led to a series of spots that ended up with Jeff going to the top and finishing Blackman.

And sure enough, after the match, Snow and Blackman argued. Snow tried to make up for it by bringing out Harvey Wippleman dressed as the Easter bunny, but Blackman beat up on Snow and left him laid out in the ring.

Hardcore Holly came to the ring and called out Saturn, making fun of his tattoos.

(2) Perry Saturn battled Hardcore Holly to a double disqualification after they both assaulted the referee. After the match, Holly went under the ring and pulled out a stop sign and proceeded to beat Saturn with it.

(3) Scotty Too Hotty pinned Taka Michinoku to retain the Light-heavyweight Title in an apparent three-way match that also involved Dean Malenko. I don't know if Malenko was scheduled to be part of the match, but he came down (with music) after the other two had already started and joined in. It was a nice little match that featured some cool spots.

After the finish, an angered Malenko hooked Scotty Too Hotty in the Texas Cloverleaf and refused to release it. Several officials entered the ring to break the hold, and afterwards Scotty Too Hotty had to be helped to the back.

Chris Benoit came to the ring to address Chris Jericho. I know Benoit has the reputation of being below par on the mic, but I thought this one was effective for what it was worth. Jericho's entrance started while Benoit was mid-sentence and got an absolutely HUGE pop. Jericho then insulted Benoit and the two brawled outside of the ring. The Walls of Jericho were applied to Benoit and Jericho left celebrating. This wasn't an official match; Benoit wasn't even wearing his wrestling gear.

(4) Faarooq (w/Bradshaw) and Bull Buchanan (w/Big Bossman) fought to a no-contest. After Faarooq was laid out on the outside, Buchanan and Bossman double-teamed Bradshaw in the ring before Kane's pyros hit and he came down to chokeslam the Big Bossman.

Smackdown matches

Road Dogg came out to start the show and talks about how he and X-Pac will be wearing the gold after Backlash. This leads to...

(1) Road Dogg pinned Edge after he reversed a small package. Short match without much heat.

Throughout the night, Austin footage was shown on the Ovaltron. The first was the Mike Tyson confrontation, which led some of us to think Tyson was going to be involved tonight. Some people were saying Tyson was there, but he wasn't shown on the big screen and I certainly couldn't see him.

Triple H came out for the night's long interview session. Triple H admitted that he has bad days, but insisted that Monday Night was not one of them. He took cheapshots at Shane for being a "mama's boy" and suggested that he wasn't actually going to Pedigree Linda on Raw. He then went on to accuse Linda McMahon of stacking the deck at Backlash in what had been an even match-up before the addition of Austin. Triple H then booked a Chris Jericho vs. The Rock Smackdown main event that would include lumberjacks selected by Shane McMahon.

Tazz's music and graphics hit and he came out to the top of the ramp. Tazz (wearing his ECW belt) displayed promo-making gifts I previously had no idea he had as he challenged Triple H to a match later in the night - even going as far as to say he didn't care if the title was on the line. Triple H responded by accepting the challenge and he ridiculed ECW and the fans in Philly who were cheering for ECW.

Chyna told Lita that Eddie was happy since he had just passed his GED and because of his happiness he'd be willing to give Essa Rios another opportunity to tag with him. Chyna warned Lita not to screw it up.

(2) The Dudley Boys defeated Eddie Guerrero & Essa Rios after performing the Dudley Death Drop on Eddie Guerrero. With Rios beat up on the outside, Lita attempted to help out Eddie by jumping off the top rope in attempt to cross-body one of the Dudleys. She instead accidentally hit Guerrero leading to the Dudley victory.

After the match, Chyna confronted Lita in the ring and grabbed her by the hair. Chyna then made eye contact with the Dudleys, who were outside the ring. The Dudleys quickly pulled out a table and Chyna left Lita in their hands. Lita took the table spot to a huge pop from the crowd as Chyna walked off. Buh-Buh Ray experienced his euphoria.

Rikishi Phatu came out then The Big Show followed to his Aggression music - doing a stupid looking dance on his way down. Big Show then grabbed the mic to announce that in Philly he's not known as The Big Show but instead "The Big Funky." Big Show challenged Rikishi to a dance contest. The Big Show showed some of his moves and then allowed Rikishi to have his turn. While Rikishi was getting down, Big Show hit him from behind, leading to...

(3) Rikishi Phatu fought The Big Show to a double-countout. In as good of a match that can be expected from these two, both men ended up outside and were counted out.

After the match, Big Show was walking to the back when Rikishi grabbed the mic insisting the TBS return to the ring and "finish what we started." When Show returned to the ring, they both started dancing together, then took turns doing individual moves. This time it was Rikishi who turned on Show, giving him a superkick in the middle of a dance routine. Rikishi then stormed off, leaving Show hurt in the ring.

Kurt Angle announced he will be at the premier of the new movie Gladiator, and then made sure to drop some super-insider Hollywood lingo on the fans. Angle then bashed The Big Show's fall from a once-proud champion to a big dancing fool before announcing he'd get his Intercontinental Title back from Chris Benoit tonight.

(4) Triple H (w/Stephanie McMahon) pinned Tazz. This was a decent match featuring some nice spots and suplexes by Tazz. The crowd was really into the whole thing. Some Stephanie interference led Triple H to gain the advantage and he prepared Tazz for the Pedigree. Tommy Dreamer came from the crowd to prevent the Pedigree. Dreamer then grabbed a chair and went after Triple H, only to accidentally lay out Tazz. Triple H then hit the Pedigree on Dreamer and pinned Tazz. Both Tazz and Dreamer laid in the ring for a while before Tazz left up the ramp while Dreamer walked off to the side. Dreamer and Tazz didn't acknowledge one another after getting up.

(5) T&A (w/Trish Stratus) pinned D-Lo Brown & The Godfather. During the match, Buh-Buh Ray Dudley stood at the top of the ramp and eyed Trish Stratus until D-Von came and talked him away. The Godfather was pinned after a sloppy sequence.

After the match, D-Lo's body language suggested he was upset with The Godfather's showmanship antics while D-Lo was trying to win matches. They appeared to make up, but when they went to hug each other D-Lo lifted the Godfather into the Lo'down. This was the exact same way using the exact same maneuver as when D-Lo turned on The Godfather two years ago when The Nation officially dissolved.

(6) X-Pac pinned Christian. A very short match. Road Dogg tried to interfere, but Edge made the save. X-Pac then hit the X-Factor on Christian to score the pinfall. The two teams fought after the match with Edge & Christian coming out on top.

Throughout the night, Stephanie recruited Kurt Angle as a lumberjack while Shane and Triple H did the same with The Dudleys and Buchanan & Bossman, respectively.

(7) Kurt Angle fought Chris Benoit to a no-contest in a match for the Intercontinental Championship. After a nice series of wrestling, The Big Show came out and thwarted Benoit's attempt at diving headbutt by knocking him off the top rope. Perhaps he did this to get Angle disqualified (I can't remember an official announcement), as he then chased Angle into the back.

Footage was shown of Crash Holly at the circus which was also taking place in town today. The Mean Streets Posse, dressed as clowns, jumped him and unsuccessfully tried to win the Hardcore Championship.

(8) Chris Jericho pinned The Rock. In a match that had huge heat, Jericho and The Rock basically took turns throwing one another outside the ring to let the lumberjacks do their business. Various lumberjack finishers were attempted on the participants (including an X-Factor from X-Pac and a flying headbutt from Benoit that left Benoit holding his jaw outside the ring) but both men kicked out after two. The Rock pulled Triple H into the ring and beat on him. Jericho went outside the ring and took on some of the lumberjacks. Eventually it got back into the ring and The Rock hit a Rock Bottom on Jericho. Triple H pulled The Rock's leg after a two count. The Rock hit Jericho with ANOTHER Rock Bottom and Triple H came in and hit The Rock with the belt. Triple H then pulled Jericho on top of The Rock where he scored the victory.

After the cameras stopped rolling:

The lumberjacks left and D-X gloated at the top of the ramp. The Rock and Jericho rose to their feet. The Rock looked toward the ramp and motioned for Triple H to come down. Meanwhile, Jericho sat on the top turnbuckle and egged on the crowd. Triple H took off his shirt and warm-up pants and ran down. Jericho ran X-Pac off. The Rock caught him and slammed him in what had to be the most devastating slam in the history of wrestling as Triple H stayed motionless for a good ten minutes.

The Rock then motioned Chris Jericho to perform The People's Elbow on the fallen Triple H. Jericho looked reluctant, then did the arm kick and the hand motions. He bounced off the ropes, ran past Triple H then did the Lionsault from the other ropes onto Triple H. The Rock then stepped in to show Jericho how it was done and did the real People's Elbow to a huge response. The two continued to beat up on Triple H and then posed for the crowd.
